چکیده

This paper is about the alleged tension between methodological individualism and evolutionary ideas in the work of Friedrich Hayek. This issue is much debated, but I focus my attention on a quite original incompatibility argument by Geoffrey Hodgson. Hodgson sympathizes with the evolutionary Hayek, arguing that Hayek’s methodological individualism involves an “ontogenetic” approach to social science, while his evolutionary thinking suggests a “phylogenetic” approach. “Ontogeny” refers to the development not only of organisms but also of social systems on the basis of fixed developmental rules, while “phylogeny” refers to the evolution of such entities through selection Jan Willem Lindemans ([email protected]) is a visiting scholar at the Philosophy, Politics, and Economics Program of the University of Pennsylvania. An earlier version of this paper was presented at the sixth conference of the International Network for Economic Method under the title “Methodological Individualism as an Ontogenetic Approach to Social Order.” The research was funded by the Center for Ethics, Social and Political Philosophy at the KU Leuven. The author thanks the participants at the conference, Toon Vandevelde, and an anonymous referee for the comments and suggestions. He emphasizes that remaining errors are entirely his responsibility. Anthropology is the study of the physical, social, and cultural development of humans. It has been considered part of cognitive science since that enterprise was organized in the 1970s (Gardner, 1985; D’Andrade, 1995), but anthropology is also classed as a social science because of its concern with groups and cultural interactions. Ironically, cognitive anthropology has waned as a practice with...

Nominalism and Systemism: On the Non-Reductionist Nature of Methodological Individualism

This paper investigates the systemic nature of methodological individualism. According to widespread belief, the notion of autonomy of the actor that is defended by methodological individualism is mistaken because it is incompatible with the study of society in terms of its organized structure. We argue that this viewpoint must be rejected. In our opinion, it stems from confusion between ontolo...

A naturalistic ontology for mechanistic explanations in the social sciences

There are several approaches in the social sciences that seek to provide causal explanations of social phenomena neither in terms of general causal laws nor in terms of case-specific narratives , but, at a middle level of generality, in terms of recurrent causal patterns or “mechanisms ” (Hedström and Swedberg 1998 ). Typically, these approaches invoke micro-mechanisms to explain macro-social p...

Hayek contra Pangloss on Evolutionary Systems

Some analysts have criticized Friedrich Hayek’s theory of cultural evolution for implying that the rules, customs, norms, and institutions that emerge from the evolutionary process are necessarily efficient or desirable in all cases. This charge is unfounded. The present article defends Hayek versus his critics in two ways: First, it restates Hayek’s own objections to the idea that cultural evo...
